Louis Van Gaal has United are capable of lifting the Championship


Manchester United Boss Louis van Gaal has said his side are still in the race for the Premier League title after their 1-0 win over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

United moved into fifth spot, seven points behind table toppers Arsenal, after Wayne Rooney's goal secured each of the three points from a hot match

Van Gaal, asked whether they could in any case win the title, said: "We have a great deal of matches still to go. In any case, we can do it, since we demonstrate each week we can do it."

He said the win at Liverpool was "important" in light of the fact that both Arsenal and second-set Leicester had been held to draws and included: "The gap is seven points. We can conquer that, that's what I'm pondering.

Rooney broke the record for the most Premier League goals scored for one club, surpassing Arsenal legend Thierry Henry.

Henry oversaw 175 goals in 258 matches for the Gunners, however Rooney equalled the record by scoring twice against Newcastle in a 3-3 draw midweek.

The England international has now netted five times in United's initial four January matches, and his goals in a United shirt now at 243 goals.
